As a teenager and later, as a young man I always felt at some level – invincible. Now that I’m at the age where I’m staring down Medicare and watching 21^st century television bringing me upheavals and disaster in real time, I spend more time thinking about “what if?”

As the current disasters in Japan unfold and as a witness to 9/11 & Katrina, I know one thing for sure. Nothing is certain.

You’re reading this because you probably have a relationship with a pet bird – or more than one. In any case – what if?

What if you experience a fire? Windy City Parrot burned to the ground June 23^rd 2005 – things happen. Your basement can flood. Anything can happen.

You protect your family – you have pets. If the unthinkable happened are you ready to grab your bird and seek “higher ground”?
 

Ok let’s lighten things up. You know, I know and the bird knows that when you leave – the bird gets P.O.’d. We don’t talk about it. There’s no hushed discussion – but you know, your bird is not happy you won’t be close.

In either scenario above – wouldn’t it be nice to be able to have the option of taking your bird or parrot with you?

Unlike a dog you can’t say “come on boy – up here on the seat.” Parrots can be like autistic children – “I want to go with you but I’m not going in THERE!”

Bottom line – are you prepared to travel with your bird? As a recreational experience or a god forbid - disaster – do you have a plan to transport your bird?

70 MPH winds from the west are not a good time to try to coax your Cockatoo into a travel cage – your bird should be as comfortable with their travel as they are with their everyday bird cage home.

Bird travel carriers are not something you should acquire the week before you leave on vacation. They should be part of your arsenal of bird care just like a good bird first aid kit.
