Storage of Harrison's Organic Bird Food
I ordered a bunch of stuff from you few months ago and among other things there were Harrison's pellets. It took quite a while my parrot started to eat pellets and I am still combining seed mixes with this other type of nutrition so my parrot is not even close of eating the first 1lb bag of food. The problem is that it says on the bag the food is good for 4-6 weeks and we are passing that time .
I refrigerated food but I was wondering do you have some first hand experience/tips regarding storage and a real expiration date of the food? Can I still feed my parrot after those 4-6 weeks?
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Morana
Dear Morena
Harrisons is organic and as such has no preservatives and if left out in the heat and opened it can start to sprout bugs. (ALL bird food has bug eggs as it grows outside, most pellets do not but as Harrisons is not cooked at a very high temperature to preserve the nutrients, it can still retain a few viable bug eggs.
If the food has been kept closed and cool it can still be used for a few more months, but if left out and open, it may not be as tasty to your birds, like if you left a bag of chips on the counter open for a few days, they can get stale.
Here is a pellet conversion chart to help convert your birds to pellets.

Don't waste the food, break it up and bake in corn muffins for your bird, use it up.
Some birds will not take to pellets no matter how hard you try so sometimes it is just best to stay on a diet with a few seeds, fruits, vegetables, bits of proteins like a chicken wing or scrambled eggs. basically anything you can eat, so can they. But no coffee, no chocolate, no avocado.

Hi!
Thank you for the prompt answer.
I kept my food in the original container in the kitchen in the cupboard. It has been hot only for the past few days but other than that I could even say it was a bit chilly. As it bagan to be warmer and wormer I put the food in the refrigirator but that food has now been open for more than a month. He is still eating it like before so I don't think that the taste is spoiled bud I am concerned for my birds well being. Any comments?
As for the muffins ,or in my case Harrison's bird bread, how long can I use it if the container is opened?-because I don't want to bake it all at once.
Thanks for the chart:-)
PS: he likes Harrison's pepper lifetime coarse just ok:-)
Kind regards,
Morana
