Restoring an Old Bird Cage

Dear Windy City Parrots,

Searching for information about painting parrot cages, I came across your web page:

http://www.windycityparrot.com/page/windycityparrot/paint_2

Informative and considerably less scary than a lot of sites.  Your "guidelines" make a lot of sense... but

I am going crazy trying to find paint that :

  • Does not contain lead, zinc or chromate
  • Is "high adhesion", formulated to bond with the metal surface
  • Is hard-wearing
  • Is fast drying

AND that looks like it would be suitable for metal.  Many of the paints look very environmentally friendly, but seem more suited to painting the inside walls of a house, or wooden furniture.

Can you please tell me some brand names, or manufacturers, or give me some other clues that will help me to find a paint that is suitable for a metal parrot cage.

The used cage I purchased (yes, now I believe it was a bad idea, and maybe I should just junk it, but...) is roughly (estimating from memory) 24 inches wide.  about 18 inches front to back, and the cage itself is about 30 inches high.  The stand, with casters is part of the cage.  It has a pan on top (play area), and a pan on bottom.

I will need more than just a little "touch-up" bottle.  I would think that a pint would be enough, but I'd gladly buy a quart (I'm not made out of money, I'd hope not to pay too much more than $20 for the paint I'd need.) if that's how it came.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lynn
