Female Parakeet Bites Off Male's Toe - Cage Suggestions

I have this flight cage for my two parakeets. Unfortunately, the female has bitten off (!!) the male's toenail and I've separated them while he heals.

Is there any way to partition this cage? Then I could keep them together without endangering him.

Any other advice?

Thanks, Claudia

Dear Claudia

Indoor Bird Aviary Cage & Stand for Finch to Conure 32I am sorry to hear of your birds injury.

We have no divider that we can provide for the purpose you ask. Also, if the divider is barred or screened and the male lands on it, the female will have access to his toes again and can bite them again.

You pair may have to be separated permanently if they cannot get along.

Is one much older/younger than the other? Was the male very persistent in wanting to breed? Did the cage belong to the female first?

One thing you can try AFTER your male is fully healed in a separate cage.

Learn more about the AE 13221 Aviary Bird Cage

The female has to be taken out of the AE 13221 Bird cage and put in another cage. Then re-arrange the whole cage, toys, perches, etc. If you have a nest box in there, take it out, your birds need a break from romance.

Then you can put the healed MALE back in, she cannot go back in for a few days, let the male have the cage, then try to put her back in with him. She might be less likely to feel he was taking over HER home. Females can be very protective of their homes and the males should be put in first.

You also should have lots of toys, or something, fabric plants that hang, etc to create places one can go and "hide" to get away from the advances of the other bird for awhile.

This works well for finches, canaries, etc in which one mate follows the other too much and the other mate is getting beat up or worn out.

I hope it works out for the two.

Thank you.

Catherine

Yes, the female was there first and already is one year old. The male is still young, 3-4 months old. We introduced him to her cage (gradually) at the end of Dec.

He is a nice fellow. He showed some courting behavior but did not try to breed yet. There was no nestbox in there, although they might have thought the Snuggle Hut was a nestbox. He may have been competing with her for the fresh greens.

We have them separate now.  I don't know if we'll try to reunite them but I will follow your recommendations if we do.

Thank you very much for your helpful advice.

Claudia
