Birds' selective fall hearing may hold lessons for humans, researchers say

Turns out birds adjust their hearing seasonally. When it's not mating season, birds decrease the level of their hearing. especially females, so as to spend less energy maintaining their auditory system before winter because they're not seeking a mate.
