Misconceptions about Bird Cage Powder Coating

Greetings:

One of your customers has referred me to you.  I am interested in the above referenced cage for the CAG in our lives.  However, I am confused.  The powder coat color chips shown on your web page include what appears to be dark green.  That is the color I want.  However, I can't find a way to order that color.  How do I do it?

There are two categories of powder coating that are the most durable - the vein colors (black/white vein, etc.) and hammertone colors ( green hammertone for example).  Are the black and sandstone coats in either of these categories?  If yes, which one.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat

For 3 years in the eighties I managed a powder coating company - Shelf-Kote in Barrington Ill. I’m not an expert but I did oversee over 5000 blue USPS mailboxes coated and returned to service with 10 year warranties on color irrespective of the part of the country they were going to.

The durability of powder coating has no relationship to color. Epoxy, acrylic , polyester and nylon all have different properties. Durability is also based upon the preparation of the substrate (cage metal), consistent application of the powder, the granularity size of the powder (the smaller the better) and consistent oven temperature.

It’s a common misconception but the veining colors are actually a lesser quality powder coat. That’s because the veining does a good job of hiding imperfections. The carrier you’re looking at uses polyester, the metal has been acid washed and all the colors have equal durability.
