What Happens When They Want the Wrong Bird Cage?

A women  comes into the Birdie Boutique, with her mother in tow and wants to look at bird cages for an DYH Amazon she's has since 1979. I point to the new large Royalty cage from Prevue and she says "Oh no, much too big."

Weaving her way through the crowded bird cage show room she walks over to a Prevue 3151 Play top cage  which is 18"x18" and I say "that's a Cockatiel cage, it's way too small for your Amazon. To which she immediately replayed "that's all the room I have."

The dilemma for me is how to get her to buy a bird cage close to the appropriate  size without insulting her. But she stood her ground. I showed her an NOS (New Old Stock) Prevue 152 welded 24" x 22" but she felt she had neither the room or a way to get it home (it doesn't break down).

So as a retailer, where does my responsibility end? She could easily walk into a big box pet store and not get the third degree. She could order anything she want no questions asked on line.

She decided to go home and measure. If she returns and wants to buy the cockatiel size cage, should I refuse to sell it to her? Share your thoughts on our Facebook Fan Page

Well, this is the age old dilema. You could point out to her the minimum recommended space for the particular bird, but if it doesn't fit her requirements, what can you do? I would have asked her the size of the cage she had her bird in now, and that would have dictated if the bird was acclimated to the smaller size cage already. Also, If the 18X18 size model had a playpen top opening, it would provide extra room for the bird when utilized. This might compensate somewhat for the excercise/room situation, offering room to move around. I do though have a sneaky suspicion that the true problem was price and not cage size. I hate to say this, but the saying "The Customer is always right", might appy here. If she left your store and went to a chain and purchased an obviously smaller cage anyway, who lost out? The inevitable outcome would be she bought a new cage anyway, no matter where, and you lost the sale. It's like the woman in the shoe store who insists on a size 6 when you know she needs a 7. You can't convice her to be comfortable and you'll lose the sale if you insist on the large size she really needs.
The other possibility is to sell her the cage she wants and tell her you will allow a trade-in discount, at a later date, if she decides she wants to upgrade to the larger recommended size.
    Hope this helps.

I would have told here to find a good home for the bird, because she doesn't have the room to take proper care of him. I would not have sold her the wrong cage!
