The Budgerigar or budgie is Australian. They're the most popular pets in the world. In the US parakeet is generally meant to mean budgie but there are number of different species that are considered parakeets
The term Grass Parakeet or Grasskeet refers to a large number of small Australian parakeets native to grasslands such as Neophema and Princess Parrot. Australian Rosellas are also parakeets.
Ringneck Parakeets can be African and there are the Asian parakeet species of the Psittacula genus. The Alexandrine parakeet is one of the biggest of the parakeets.
Brotogeris parakeets, Monk Parakeets and Lineolated Parakeets (Lineolated Parakeets have short tails) are South American. Monk parakeets or Quakers are plentiful here in Chicago. They are able to live through the cold weather because they build large colonial nests. Unfortunately many of these nests are built in or near electrical transformers because of the warmth causing many birth deformities.
Some species, especially the larger parakeets, may be referred to as 'parrot' or parakeet' interchangeably. For example, 'Alexandrine Parrot' and 'Alexandrine Parakeet' are used to refer to the same species. In some cases they can mimic words of their owners or other sounds. They love grated carrots, raw broccoli, and green leafy vegetables.
Other Parakeet species include: Red-rumped Parakeet, Grey-cheeked Parakeet, Moustache Parakeet, Plum-headed Parakeet, Golden-manteled Parakeet, Derbyan Parakeet, Crimson Rosella Parakeet, Canary-winged Parakeet, Bourke's Parakeet, Alexandrine Parakeet and Barraband's Parakeet
